Devotional Observation – April 4, 2017

John 21:23-24 says, Then this saying went out among the brethren that this disciple would not die. Yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but, ‘If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you?’ This is the disciple who testifies of these things, and wrote these things; and we know that his testimony is true.” Sometimes we get it; sometimes we don’t. That’s how it was with the disciples: Jesus said one thing, they got another. He had contrasted Peter’s martyrdom with essentially a ‘what if’ scenario for John. John here declares it was about him and he is the author. It’s hard to improve on eyewitness accounts. Thus John’s “testimony is true.” How careful are we to really listen instead of only hearing him? Do we listen with mixed motives? Let’s have hearts to regularly understand him the first time.
