John 19:19-20 says, “Now Pilate wrote a title and put it on the cross. And the writing was: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS. Then many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin.” Soldiers nailed a sign above Jesus’ head. “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews” was Pilate’s way of scorning the Jews who pressured him to crucify him. What kings get such treatment? None! Overhead signs declared the crime(s) of the prisoner. Since these words state no crimes they declare his innocence. So Jesus pays our guilt having none of his own, “the just for the unjust” (1 Peter 2.18). Now, after doing wrong, no law in heaven holds us guilty. Jesus holds us in his hand (10:28). Let’s praise him today so outsiders see the difference.
