Devotional Observation – December 30, 2016

John 16:33 says, “These things I have spoken to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” At long last, Jesus finished preparing his disciples in Gethsemane for what was coming after his imminent betrayal. From the Last Passover meal to now, John covers Jesus’ words in 4.5 chapters. Jesus’ primary concern is the disciples’ “peace” amid “tribulation” as pivotal events were coming: his betrayal, trials, crucifixion, burial, resurrection and ascension. Remembering that he has “overcome the world” brings “good cheer.” Who doesn’t need that today? But it requires a disciplined focus on Jesus and the victory he’s given to us. Recollecting that we’ll never suffer more than he did and anticipating our heavenly future helps. We see what the disciples never saw coming. Let’s keep our focus to have peace today.
