Devotional Observation – October 24, 2016

John 12:27-28 says, “Now my soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? But for this purpose I came to this hour. Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven, saying, “I have both glorified it and will glorify it again.” In the context of “hating his life in this world” (v. 25), Jesus spoke of the “hour” (a short, fixed period of time) of his death. John used the word “troubled” frequently in this book. It means horrified, agitated, anxious. Paying for the sins of the world (“this purpose”) would not be easy, even for Jesus. What kept him moving forward was “glorifying the Father’s name,” the great “I AM” (Exodus 3:14). His Father responded affirmatively and favorably. If our purpose and drive are the same as Jesus, the Father says the same to us. Should we need any other motivation?
