John 11:49-50 says, “And one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, ‘You know nothing at all, nor do you consider that it is expedient for us that one man should die for the people, and not that the whole nation should perish.'” Lazarus’ resurrection was the last straw for the Jewish religious leaders. So they met to discuss getting rid of (killing) Jesus (vs. 47-48). High priest Caiaphas prophesied that Jesus “should die for the people” to save the whole nation from being destroyed by the Romans. He essentially approved their murderous plot, speaking politically and nationally. But unwittingly he affirmed God’s purposes of Jesus’ death for saving the Jews spiritually. Caiaphas got the former but missed the latter. May we not do the same! Let’s daily affirm that God is working his will to establish his Kingdom for his glory!
