John 11:47-48 says, Then the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered a council and said, ‘What shall we do? For this man works many signs. If we let him alone like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and nation.'” In response to raising Lazarus, Jesus’ enemies met together. With undeniable miraculous testimony before them, they hardened themselves in unbelief motivated by self-preservation. The chief priests were almost exclusively Sadducees denying the supernatural and opposed the Pharisees who believed in God and followed his law. Yet they collaborated against Jesus. It is the same with us in times of persecution. Those who oppose God will oppose us. With evidence of our obedience in front of them, reasoning is fruitless. Our best witness is the fruit of God’s Spirit in our lives. Let’s show them that and remember the eternal glory that’s coming (2 Cor. 4:17-18).
