John 11:14-15 says, “ Then Jesus said to them plainly, ‘Lazarus is dead. And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, that you may believe. Nevertheless let us go to him.'” After hearing that Lazarus was sick, Jesus stayed two more days before returning to Bethany. By then Lazarus was dead. But Jesus had a plan: he didn’t just move on to another place, he returned. And he was “glad” that he “was not there.” But his joy wasn’t in Lazarus’ death, but in what would follow. He deliberately let something terrible occur only to answer it by completely reversing its impact. True, healing him would have been good, but raising him was far better in sheer power and rejoicing. So let’s not give up when things in our lives go wrong. Let’s continue to look and learn from our Savior who works his will for his glory (v. 4).
