Devotional Observation – October 2, 2016

John 11:21-22 says, “Now Martha said to Jesus, ‘Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you.'” Martha and Mary are mourning the loss of their brother Lazarus. As Jesus approached their village Martha meets him. Without blaming Jesus for Lazarus’ death, she affirms his power to prevent it. Her second statement, “Even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you,” sounds hopeful and optimistic in light of her loss and pain. But she recoils later when Jesus calls to open the tomb (v. 39). Obviously she wanted Jesus to somehow redeem this family tragedy. Can we stare disaster in the face with faith like hers? Is our complete confidence in the Lord? Let’s make sure we trust our good God with everything, starting with family members.
