Devotional Observation – September 21, 2016

John 10:14 says, “I am the good shepherd; and I know my sheep, and am known by my own.” In his metaphor about sheep and their shepherd Jesus repeats (v. 11) that he is the good shepherd of his people. Required in this knowledge is a relationship between both based on knowledge. The amount of personal knowledge between persons determines the kind of relationship it is. A successful marriage isn’t so because of the cost of the wedding but the level of intimate working knowledge of both spouses about each other. The Old Testament prophets repeatedly described the new covenant as “knowing the Lord” based on forgiveness and removal of sins (Jeremiah 31:34). We know the Lord because of salvation, but is our working knowledge of him growing? Jesus married us to share more of himself with us each day. Let’s make our relationship with him our life’s primary pursuit.
