John 6:63 says, “It is the spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.” Jesus made this remark after the Jews misunderstood his ‘eat my flesh, drink my blood’ analogy. They thought literal; he meant spiritual. It went right over their heads. “Flesh” here can mean two things. First, if it means our bodies, then physical life is nothing without spiritual significance. Even Christ’s body on the cross is useless to an outsider not trusting him for salvation. Second, it could mean our fallen nature that responds to temptation. Such response leads to death (James 1:15). Without God’s Spirit animating us and illuminating God’s Word for us we would be hopelessly confused and lost. Since Christ’s words are life to us, do our words show life to others?”
