Devotional Observation – July 7, 2017

John 2:5 says, “His mother said to the servants, ‘Whatever he says to you, do it.'” This verse is the turning point of the story where Jesus turned water into wine at a wedding, his first miracle (v. 11). Jesus’ mother Mary became aware that the wine had run out, which would greatly shame the host, presumably the father of the bride. After a very short discussion between the two, she tells nearby servants, “do whatever he says.” Or as Nike says, “Just do it.” While Nike’s humanistic angle emphasizes human strength and ability, Mary’s statement calls for complete obedience to the Master. If all believers heeded her statement, there would be more glory for Jesus all around (v. 11). Let’s bring him that today.
