John 1:1 says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God.” Much has been said about this verse and it’s connection to Genesis 1 and 1 John 1. This first chapter of John is one of the three chapters best describing the divinity of Jesus (the other two are Colossians 1 and Hebrews 1). But why the Word? Why not something else? Because God accomplishes his will when he speaks. Think of creation: “And God said.” Simply stated, the Word (Christ) is how God does things. We should heed the advice Eli told young Samuel: “Speak, LORD, for your servant hears” (1 Samuel 3:9). We must have ears to hear (Revelation 2-3).
