Psalm 139:23-24 says, “Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me and know my anxieties; and see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” King David finishes this psalm the way he began it: “O LORD, you have searched me and known me…” He asks God to continue to examine his heart by testing/proving/scrutinizing him. Got anxieties? Who doesn’t? God has the remedy: “In the multitude of my anxieties [same word] within me, your comforts delight my soul” (Psalm 94:19). The Lord gives us comforts to delight us. We can’t be delighted and anxious at the same time! Because there remain wicked ways in us, he prays to be lead in the everlasting way. Keeping our eyes on the endgame, i.e., the kingdom, will help keep us on track.
