Devotional Observation – April 9, 2017

Daniel 1:12-14 says, “‘Please test your servants for ten days, and let them give us vegetables to eat and water to drink. Then let our appearance be examined before you, and the appearance of the young men who eat the portion of the king’s delicacies; and as you see fit, so deal with your servants.’ So he consented with them in this matter, and tested them ten days.” Daniel made this 10-day request to Melzar, the steward overseeing the eunuchs (v. 11). Rather than eat the king’s food, which was dedicated to idols, Daniel trusted God for his health through a vegan diet. ‘Eat nothing with a face,’ as they say. But this wasn’t about veganism, but sacrificed meat supposedly ‘blessed’ by demonic entities. Daniel’s approach regarding authorities was to appeal while still being respectfully firm in his convictions. Melzar “consented.” Let’s do similarly, especially with outsider authorities in our lives.
