John 21:20-22 says, “Then Peter, turning around, saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following, who also had leaned on his breast at the supper, and said, ‘Lord, who is the one who betrays you?’ Peter, seeing him, said to Jesus, ‘But Lord, what about this man?’ said to him, ‘If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you? You follow me.’” Peter’s at it again. After restoring him three times (vs. 15-17) for his three betrayals, Jesus predicts his imposed death (martyrdom) would “glorify God” (v. 19). Peter’s response is to ask what will happen to John? Impetuous Peter seemed to have a focus problem, yet Jesus called him “a stone” at the beginning (2:42). Isn’t it great that Jesus knows our future? Peter eventually became that rock/stone in character after the Holy Spirit came. Give thanks he similarly remakes us daily more into his image.
