Devotional Observation – March 31, 2017

John 21:17 says, He said to him the third time, ‘Simon, son of Jonah, do you love me?’ Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, ‘Do you love me?’ And he said to him, ‘Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Feed my sheep.’” For the third time Jesus calls Peter “Simon, son of Jonah,” reminding him of his three betrayals. Denied three times, restored three times. Peter again offers a qualified “I love you,” knowing his earlier willingness (13:37) to “lay down [his] life” for Jesus was well intentioned but still only human bravado. He admits Jesus “knows all things,” an amazing yet humbling realization of omniscience, that Jesus foreknew all this would happen but still stuck with him. Human nature in light of God’s divine nature brings humility. Be thankful he sticks by us today too.
