John 21:16 says, “He said to him again a second time, ‘Simon, son of Jonah, do you love me?’ He said to him, ‘Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.’ He said to him, ‘Tend my sheep.’” This second time Jesus addresses Peter as “Simon, son of Jonah,” indicating he acted like an unbeliever when he denied Jesus three times. Not easy to hear. In his first response Peter didn’t respond to the “more than these” part of Jesus’ question (v. 15). Jesus already knew Peter was struggling, so he doesn’t include it again here. This second question is more basic and general: “do you love me?” After Peter’s qualified “yes,” Jesus tells him to tend his sheep — go forward focusing on the positive, caring for his followers. He was, after all, the leader of the disciples. Who sees you as a leader? Let’s tend Jesus’ sheep today.
