John 20:30-31 says, And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name.” With these words John explains why he wrote his letter: “that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ…and [by] believing you may have [eternal] life in his name.” This is obvious since it immediately follows Thomas declaring, “My Lord and my God!” (v.28) after seeing the risen Jesus the first time. Credible, tangible, physical evidence like this is critical to those seeking God. This is why believers habitually refer this gospel to them. The resurrection makes “the Word” (1:1) irrefutably powerful in human experience. Let’s never forget or reject that Jesus’ resurrection is the most important event in history.
