Devotional Observation – February 23, 2017

John 19:28-29 says, “After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, ‘I thirst!’ Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to his mouth.” Now the time has come for Jesus to die. Everything had been “accomplished” and Scripture was “fulfilled.” These are the same Greek word that means fulfilled. “Hyssop” was a short, leafy, plant with a single stalked Jews used for ceremonial cleansing. Here we see God’s faithfulness to his character, his will and his word. Everything accomplished, nothing was missed, down to the smallest detail. And since this method included paying for our sins, we should always rejoice that he did for us what we could never do for ourselves. Let’s show outsiders today just how great our God is.
