John 19:25-27 says, “Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing by, he said to his mother, ‘Woman, behold your son!’ Then he said to the disciple, ‘Behold your mother!’ And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home.” In the early afternoon near the end of his 6 hours on the cross, in agonizing pain as his strength was almost gone, Jesus sees his mother Mary and others, including John. He declares John her son and her his mother. Doing so transferred his duty as her provider, being her firstborn son, to him. Paying for our sins didn’t eliminate his earthly responsibilities. They went hand in hand. Let’s make sure we’re not so heavenly minded that we’re no earthly good.
