Devotional Observation – February 15, 2017

John 19:14-15 says, “Now it was the Preparation Day of the Passover, and about the sixth hour. And he said to the Jews, ‘Behold your King!’ But they cried out, ‘Away with him, away with him! Crucify him!’ Pilate said to them, ‘Shall I crucify your King?’ The chief priests answered, ‘We have no king but Caesar!'” As Jews prepared for the Passover lamb, their leaders prepared Jesus for the same fate. Pilate says “behold” the third time (v. 4-5), hoping to change their minds. He mocked them saying, ‘look what I did to your king!’ However, God’s own people declare their loyalty to “Caesar,” rejecting Jesus finally and utterly. With this declaration Pilate probably felt better going forward. But by now everyone was entirely deceived. Jesus makes all his enemies very strange bedfellows. Let’s honor Jesus’ lordship in every way possible for his glory and outsiders who watch us.
