John 19:7-9 says, “The Jews answered him, ‘We have a law, and according to our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.’ Therefore, when Pilate heard that saying, he was the more afraid, and went again into the Praetorium, and said to Jesus, ‘Where are you from?’ But Jesus gave him no answer.” The conversation continued heating up. The Jews now claimed Jesus “made himself the Son of God.” Son of God? This was far different than just “King of the Jews” (18:39, 19:3), the original charge. Pilate became “more afraid.” Already afraid, even superstitious but now more so, he quickly asked Jesus, “Where are you from?” This was a different question that Jesus didn’t answer (he didn’t have to), adding to Pilate’s dilemma. Pilate didn’t know. We do. Since we do, let’s live like he is both our King and God’s Son.
