Devotional Observation – January 25, 2017

John 18:10-11 says, “Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus. So Jesus said to Peter, ‘Put your sword into the sheath. Shall I not drink the cup which my Father has given me?'” ThisĀ  shows why we hate to love Peter. Just before Jesus is arrested and after Jesus secures his disciples freedom, Peter cuts off Malchus’ ear. We love Peter because he reminds us of us. When we read this knowing we’d do the same thing. That’s why we hate loving him. He walks by sight to “defend” Jesus, while our Savior says to do the opposite: ‘put away your sword; I have my Father’s cup (of death) to drink.’ Peter was neither on the same page nor planet Jesus was. Let’s walk by faith today and follow Jesus, not Peter.
