Devotional Observation – January 16, 2017

John 17:20 says, “I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in me through their word.” Jesus continued praying to his Father in Gethsemane while Judas and the guards get closer. But Jesus was praying for future disciples — us! — to get closer to him by faith. That happens when those who are disciples reach out to outsiders. Notice the progression in this part of his prayer. First, Jesus had “given them [the Father’s] word” (v. 14). Next the disciples were sanctified “by [the Father’s] word,” which “is truth” (v. 17). Then in today’s verse outsiders believe in Jesus “through their word,” namely, the disciple’s testimony and witness. Because we’re now his disciples, we carry the Father’s word to win others who are lost like we were. Since Jesus prayed for outsiders to believe, let’s capitalize on God-given open doors today.
