Devotional Observation – January 6, 2017

John 17:5 says, “And now, O Father, glorify me together with yourself, with the glory which I had with you before the world was.” In prayer to his Father, Jesus in Gethsemane looks to his own finish line. He completed the work his Father gave him (v. 4). Now it’s crunch time…literally. It’s fourth quarter, two-minute warning. He must take on his back the “sins of the whole world” (1 John 2:1). It will crush him (Isaiah 53). Judas is coming with temple soldiers. The night grows darker by the minute. Everything rides on what happens next. So Jesus looks to what he desires most: a return to “the glory” he enjoyed alongside his Father before his incarnation. Here we see unmistakably his preexistence before his birth. But after he returns, it’ll be better: he’ll share that glory with us! Marvel at our Savior and his work for us today.
