Devotional Observation – December 28, 2016

John 16:20 and 22 says, “Most assuredly, I say to you that you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice; and you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned into joy…Therefore you now have sorrow; but I will see you again and your heart will rejoice, and your joy no one will take from you.” Jesus is wrapping up his final words to the disciples in Gethsemane. While they have “sorrow” when he is crucified, “the world will rejoice.” Polar opposite reactions! That’s how clueless outsiders are. But when Jesus returns to them via resurrection and then Pentecost through his Spirit, their “heart will rejoice, and no one will take your joy.” That is why joy should be one of the hallmarks of our witness to them. It’s meant to go the distance. Do others see us as joyful? Does it attract their interest enough to ask?
