John 14:13-14 says, “And whatever you ask in my name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in my name, I will do it.” After telling the disciples at the Last Passover he would leave them and shocking Peter by predicting his three denials, Jesus now wants to assure them all. In his physical absence they should make requests to God “the Father” and Jesus “will do it.” While a great many Christians close their prayers by saying “in Jesus’ name,” there’s more to it than that. All prayers should center on Christ’s purposes and kingdom, be based on his authority and accomplishments and aim for his glory (God’s will). All this is associated with his “name.” Even if we miss this, Jesus always prays for us (Heb. 7:25). Let’s do our best to remember to pray accordingly “in Jesus’ name.” Amen!
