Devotional Observation – November 5, 2016

John 13:8b-10 says, “‘If I do not wash you, you have no part with me.’ Simon Peter said to him, ‘Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!’ Jesus said to him, ‘He who is bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you.'” This interchange between Jesus and Peter occurred at the Last Passover. Peter initially refused Jesus’ footwashing proposal. Jesus said he rejects those who refuse. Naturally Peter asked for a bath, but Jesus said they are already “completely clean,” meaning they’re saved. “Not all of you” refers to Judas. As we serve God in a fallen world, we pick up ‘dirt’ on our ‘feet.’ We’ve been bathed/saved, but Jesus wants to wash our hearts each day. That’s what footwashing illustrates. Let’s make sure we regularly confess our sins and get a Jesus washing.
