Devotional Observation – November 3, 2016

John 13:5 says, After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which he was girded.” The Last Passover meal was underway when Jesus began “to wash the disciples’ feet” and dry them with the towel around his waist. His action not only literally cleaned their feet, but he also lowered himself to functioning like a household slave. Moreover he showed uncommon honor to his followers in a way that shocked them, with Peter even saying, “You shall never wash my feet!” (v. 8). Honoring people in our culture doesn’t happen very often among the rank and file. We tend to honor people who are already in honorable positions like the wealthy, civic and religious leaders, academics, media stars, etc. As we imitate Jesus, lets pleasantly shock those who don’t expect honorable attention.
