John 12:49-50 says, “For I have not spoken on my own; but the Father who sent me gave me a command, what I should say and what I should speak. And I know that his command is everlasting life. Therefore, whatever I speak, just as the Father has told me, so I speak.” With these comments Jesus finished speaking publicly before heading into his Last Passover (Ch. 13). Notice that God’s “command is everlasting life.” That’s what he wants for everyone. Yet Jesus’ words show the uniqueness of his relationship with the Father. No one else has that nor can they attain it on their own. Many people want an inclusive Jesus who lets other religious figures (Buddha, Mohammed, etc.) take their disciples to heaven too. It won’t happen. None of them said the kinds of things Jesus said. Let’s not downsize Jesus by falling prey to false spiritual inclusivity.
