John 10:17-18 says, “Therefore my Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This command I have received from my Father.” With these statements Jesus concluded his metaphor of the shepherd and his sheep explaining how the good shepherd “gives his life for the sheep” (v. 11). One reason why the Father loves the Son is his perfect obedience. God entrusted Jesus with the authority (“power”) to raise himself after death, working with the Father (Rom. 10:9) and the Spirit (Rom. 8:11). Here God speaks and acts like God, not idols, conquering the fallen natural world. Let’s trust his resurrection power today to accomplish his will for his glory.
