Devotional Observation – September 9, 2016

John 8:50, 54a says, “And I do not seek my own glory; there is One who seeks and judges….If I honor myself, my honor is nothing. It is my Father who honors me…” In debating the Jews, they dishonored him (v. 49) accusing him of being demonized and a Samaritan (v. 48). Jesus said that it is God who seeks his glory, not Jesus himself. If he did, it would be “nothing” anyway. Imagine that: even the glory of the Second Person of the Godhead is “nothing” if it were self induced. What does this say to a narcissistic world caught up with selfies? Jesus came to earth do his Father’s will, not his own (v. 29). Do we see ourselves here for the same reason? So much of the culture easily rubs off on us. Let’s make sure we’re teflon to the world around us and sticky-notes for God’s purpose.
