John 8:45-46a says, “But because I tell the truth, you do not believe me. Which of you convicts me of sin?” After Jesus said the devil was the Jews’ father (v. 44), he reinforced that charge by pointing out their rejection of his truth telling. Then he asked a question about the character quality of the truth teller. Naturally he was perfect. We also carry the responsibility to tell the truth of God and salvation, but we’re naturally imperfect. That’s one reason for the indwelling “Holy” Spirit. Today in Christian circles we hear how believers need Jesus daily just as outsiders do. And while that’s true, Jesus also called us to grow in Christlikeness toward holiness (Rom 6:19, 22), something mentioned little today. Our character (Rom 5:4) gives rise to our behavior, which should be visibly different than outsiders for us to gain a hearing. Let’s give them that today.
