Devotional Observation – September 2, 2016

John 8:31-32 says, “Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed him, ‘If you abide in my word, you are my disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.'” While it was good that some Jews believed in Jesus, he wasn’t satisfied with their simple faith. Jesus told us to “make disciples of all nations” (Matt. 28:19). Here he tells how: “abide in his word.” The result will be knowing the truth, which brings freedom from sin (v. 34). Knowing the truth renews our mind (Rom. 12:2), and if we have presented ourselves as “living sacrifices” (Rom. 12:1), we’ll be disciples that experience freedom from sin controlling us: “sin shall not have dominion over you” (Rom. 6:14). This is not promised to those who only “believe.” Let’s fully align ourselves for God’s glory and earn the right to be heard by those who ask about the difference in us.
