Devotional Observation – August 30, 2016

John 8:12 says, “Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. He who follows me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.'” Jesus said this to the Jews at the Feast of Tabernacles in Jerusalem at the Temple. Notice he didn’t say he was the light of the Jews, but of the whole world. While this should have agitated the Jews, it didn’t seem to. They simply challenged the truthfulness of being his own witness (v. 13). You would think such a claim, which includes everyone, would be welcomed. But no, the world thinks this is intolerant of other ‘lights’ and too narrow for those who want to light their own way. They also know intuitively that such a claim leaves them with no wiggle room, ultimately their big problem. This explains why we irritate some as we follow Jesus. Follow on anyway!
