John 6:53-54 says, “Then Jesus said to them, ‘Most assuredly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.'” These words further expand Jesus’ metaphor of him being the bread of life (v. 35) and the bread that comes down from heaven (v. 33). Here he links the analogy with his body (flesh and blood), which through his death on the cross was broken and shed, respectively, pointing to the Lord’s Supper (I Corinthians 14:24-25). The Jewish crowd misunderstood this graphic element. So does the Roman Catholic Church, which utilizes a prayer that allegedly turns the bread and wine into Jesus’ actual flesh and blood. Not so! Our take home point is that because Jesus died, we live. Let’s also “die” to ourselves that others may live.
