John 6:28-29 says,“Then they said to him, ‘What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?’ Jesus answered and said to them, ‘This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he sent.'” They simply didn’t get it. After Jesus told the crowd he fed the day earlier that he would give them the food that endures to eternal life, they ask him what works they should do to get it. Notice Jesus’ answer: believe God. Trust him. Rely on him. Everything points to God sending Jesus so he could do for us what we can not do for ourselves. Some Christians think belief in or trusting Christ is a work of man. Not so. Human faith is the response toward God who is already drawing each of us to him. Our faith is God’s work. Let’s make sure our theology matches Scripture and not vice versa.
