John 5:41-42 says, “I do not receive honor from men. But I know you, that you do not have the love of God in you.” From verse 39-47 Jesus spoke about the Scriptures related to honor. Both Jewish and Roman culture were honor oriented. He begins the honor part in v. 41 by saying he did not receive honor from the Jews. That’s because they did not have God’s love in their hearts. No love, no honor. It’s as simple as that. But connecting these two thoughts is, “I know you [and what’s] in you.” Who else knows what we think and how we feel except God? This is a statement of deity. Jesus knows our hearts! Back then God’s people didn’t honor him. May we as God’s people today bring him honor. If we do, it will be the best thing ever when we see him face to face.
