John 4:15 says, “The [Samaritan] woman said to [Jesus], ‘Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw.'” As Jesus continued to speak to this woman, he used the water in Jacob’s well (v. 12) as an illustration of “a fountain springing up into everlasting life” (v. 14). Like Nicodemus before, she didn’t understand the spiritual parallel. To her credit she realized she was thirsty, even though it was physical thirst, not spiritual. We all know what it’s like to be physically thirsty. But how many of us who have salvation through Jesus go through life like this woman still missing so many parallels of spiritual realities around us? Pray that we never lose our spiritual thirst for more of him each day.
