John 3:17 says, “For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through him might be saved.” This verse follows the famous verse before it, perhaps the most quoted verse of all. In verse 17 we find why God didn’t send Jesus: for condemnation, and why he did: for salvation. Atheistic scientist Carl Sagan, host of the TV show “Cosmos,” said, “Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity…there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves.” Interesting that he recognized humanity needed saving from itself, but was too blind to see even a “hint” of any salvation anywhere. That is why Jesus came first to save and comes second to judge. Praise the Savior for your salvation!
