John 1:29 and 34 says, “The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, ‘Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!…And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.” John the Baptist was one of the witnesses of Jesus (1;15, 5:33). When he said twice he “did not know him” (1:31 & 34), he knew Jesus only as a cousin/relative, but nothing beyond that until God showed him. As a witness he knew the Son of God was also the Lamb of God who took away all our sins, not just some of them. He links these titles together to show that the Savior (Lamb) is the same as Lord (Son of God). Since we continue as his witnesses, let’s keep John’s balance intact.
