John 1:27 says, “It is he who, coming after me, is preferred before me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose.” John the Baptist is speaking again about Jesus. Despite being his cousin, John knew how great Jesus is. So great, in fact, that he claims a status lower than a slave whose job it was to untie his master’s sandals. Imagine that: the man whom Jesus described as being the greatest human-born man considered himself less worthy than a slave. At every opportunity he turned the attention to Jesus. How do we do when opportunities like this come our way? Do we have our eyes on Jesus long enough to know him as John did?
