John 1:23 says, “He said, ‘I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness: “Make straight the way of the LORD,”‘ as the prophet Isaiah said.” In this verse John the Baptist responds to the question, “Who are you?” (v. 19). This is a question of identity. John doesn’t give his name or mention his family. He doesn’t claim his tribe or credentials or profession. He wasn’t caught up with himself in any way. On the contrary he simply says he is the voice of one crying in the wilderness. It’s hard to even detect the person behind a voice in that location. How’s that description for doing God’s will?! Perhaps this is why Jesus described his cousin as the greatest born among women (Matthew 11:11). We do well to learn from this model of humility.
