John 1:9-10 says, “That was the true Light which, coming into the world, gives light to every man. He was in the world and the world was made through him, and he world did not know him.” We see several things here. First, since Jesus is the ultimate Light of the world, he illuminates every person to some degree. Some of that is “natural,” meaning, the physical world around us speaks of and points to him as Creator. For those that respond with an interested, seeking heart, he will add “spiritual” light — the gospel. Second, John reiterates that the world was made “through him” (see verse 3). Last, “the world did not know him.” John uses world in several ways. Here it seems to mean the world system, which is steeped in darkness (v. 5) and would include unbelievers. So as we carry the witness of Christ, remember Christ always does his part illuminating people. Are we doing ours?
