Psalm 147:4-5 says, “He counts the number of the stars; he calls them all by name. Great is our Lord, and mighty in power; his understanding is infinite.” In between verses that describe God’s care for Israel, the outcasts and the wounded, and how he treats the humble and wicked, the writer inserts this statement of God’s power and infinite understanding. He illustrates the latter by saying God calls the stars by name, as if they were his children. Knowing innumerable names? That’s the same word for infinite here. And why is this insertion here? Because God wants to know that he gets things right; he misses nothing that needs attention. Thank him for that today.
