Psalm 145:4 says, “One generation shall praise your works to another, and shall declare your mighty acts.” The theme of KingPsalm 146:3-4 say, “Do not put your trust in princes, nor in a son of man, in whom there is no help. His spirit departs, he returns to his earth; in that very day his plans perish.” The reasons why we cannot trust human beings is because in the ultimate sense we are all fallible, untrustworthy, unreliable and lack wisdom, especially about the big issues/questions of life. At death all our plans perish. We need help from someone higher, better, stronger, smarter and wiser than us. “Son of man” was Jesus’ favorite title for himself. After Jesus died, his spirit returned to his body on Resurrection morning, his plans didn’t and don’t perish; they are fulfilled! This is how and why we can know and trust him. Amen!
David’s last psalm is a great praise to the Lord for who he is (vs. 1-3), what he has done (vs. 5-7) and what he does or promises (vs. 8-16). See how many times the word “all” or its equivalent is used. It provides a kingdom perspective (vs. 11-13). In this framework our only response can be to pass on our praise of the King to the next generation, whether they are our biological kids or not. Failure to do so leads to spiritual disaster for our families, communities and countries, described well in Judges 2:10-13. May it please God to remind us daily to speak continually of the good work he began in each one of us every day.
