Psalm 143:8 says, “Cause me to hear your lovingkindness in the morning, for in you do I trust; cause me to know they way in which I should walk, for I lift up my soul to you.” This verse has two great prayer requests that King David asks for in the morning. First, he needs to hear of God’s lovingkindness. Before Jesus died on the cross, this assurance of God’s favor on people was more dependent on having a right attitude (trust). While such an attitude is still required on our part, after the cross God’s favor/mercy/grace is more dependent on Christ’s accomplishments on our behalf. We can look back on his achievements with confidence. The second request is for guidance, not lifting up his plans for the day but his soul, a huge distinction. May we do the same each day.
