Psalm 138:6 says, “Though the LORD is on high, yet he regards the lowly; but the proud he knows from afar.” Despite unknown circumstances, King David here is full of praise (v. 2). He worships “the LORD on high,” a perfect description of God’s rule and perspective. From on high he “regards the lowly.” More than that, Jesus characterized this saying in Matthew 11:29, “I am meek and lowly in heart.” Thus the lowly are those who humble themselves, becoming lowly by faith, and thus are in relationship to the One on high. This is in contrast to the proud whom God knows only “from afar,” as his creatures but not family members in relationship to him. “God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble” (James 4:6). When we humble ourselves, he lifts us up.
