Daniel 2:21b says, “He removes kings and raises up kings; he gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding.” In the middle of his prayer to God Daniel thanks him for revealing Nebuchadnezzar’s dream. This revelation saved their lives, so their thanks was deep and heartfelt. He praises God because he knew God had caused the dream in the king, so he also was the only One who “removes kings and raises up kings.” Remembering that God selects and oversees rulers is critical in election years. Further, he gives “wisdom…and knowledge” to those who already have some. Jesus said, “Whoever has, to him more will be given” (Matthew 13.12). People receive “wisdom and knowledge” because they are humble and thus teachable. This describes Daniel, a huge contrast compared to global kingdoms and uber powerful despots. Outsiders saw such qualities in him. Do they see them in us?
