Daniel 1:8 says, “But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s delicacies, nor with the wine which he drank; therefore he requested of the chief of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.” Daniel was among the captives of Nebuchadnezzar’s first Jewish deportation of Jews to Babylon. They were chosen to become servants in the king’s court. They were given names of local deities to help brainwash them into Babylonian culture and worldview. Sounds like they were going to today’s secular university! So Daniel determined “he would not defile himself” with the king’s very own food, the best anywhere, which had been dedicated to idols. That was simply too much. He drew his line at this point and showed submission by asking the chief. Do we have a similar line? Let’s know where it is and never cross it.
